I work in a Bridgestone shop, so I'm surrounded by every weight of motor oil known to man, and I'm trying to save money (something we all have less of now that the price of gas has gone insane).  What weight of oil would you suggest for any lubricating needs on a bike. The manual I have only says "Heavy" and "Light", that's rather vague.  I've heard parafin wax works good on chains.  Anyone ever used it?

Well, I would say, speaking from what I have calculated in my own brain, and quite possibly from what I have gleaned from external sources, ahem, I would say a light oil would be best, a wax would be good in a sense that dirt would fail to stick.
A heavy oil tends to collect dirt, grease turns into chain cake.

I have been experimenting with a mix of 50% slick 50 (for the teflon)
50% semi-synthetic motor oil (5w)
and an equal volume of paint thinner or turpentine, squirted on my chain,
it provides a nice thin coat of lube when the thinner dries.
